Jos Hachmang

Jos Hachmang was born in 1957 in Noordwijkerhout, a small village near the coast of Holland, somewhere in between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, where he is also currently living.

From 1975 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and Exeter College of Art and Design where he was the first European Fellow in Painting. In 1980, Hachmang was awarded the stipendium of the Rotterdamse Kunststichting. He started the gallery H&M in 1982 in Schiedam and did major commissions for public space. In 1990 he decided to change his scenery and left Schiedam for Noordwijkerhout.

Jos Hachmang started teaching at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, The Hague, in 1986. He became head of department of Monumental Design in 1993 and head of Visual Arts in 1998, but stopped this career in 2001 to spend all his time on his artwork.

He started as a formal, almost Hard-edge painter, but gradually became more eclectic. His current work includes elements culled from art history, contemporary design, pop culture, folk art and 1950s science fiction. He uses a wide variety of techniques, such as painting, metalworking, silkscreen and woodworking.
